Remembering Kamiyama
Lush green layers of mountains and drifting humid summer steam
Cascading waterfalls and the flow of cool, crystal clear rivers
The sound of cicada choruses and fields of rice stalks swaying in the breeze
Endless green balls of sudachi citrus and the zesty flavour of fresh ginger
Walls of neatly stacked stones and the smell of cut cedar wood
Hues of indigo dye and the sticky feeling of wet mulberry paper pulp
Thick sunrise fog on Mount Tsurugi and day flowers closing in the afternoon

In 2025, Australian-Korean artist, Shirley Cho, spent 2.5 months in Japan as one of 3 artists participating in the Kamiyama Artist in Residence program (KAIR), which was first established in 1999. Japan has always been a second home for the artist, who previously lived and studied in Tokyo for 4 years. During her residency in Kamiyama - a picturesque mountain town on the island of Shikoku - the diverse nature, the supportive KAIR team and the vibrant community there provided the artist with a unique experience of this town to research and develop new artistic work. In this exhibition at ITO Raum, Shirley presents a selection of the work made during the residency, and shares with visitors her memorable experience of Kamiyama.
